Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

YOU MIGHT be of the opinion that more than enough words have been written already on the subject of goods vehicle national type approval. Eric Gibbins and Tony Wilding would demur. They are the co-authors of this 95-page, A4 sized book which aims to help vehicle manufacturers, component suppliers, bodybuilders, dealers and operators solve GVNTA problems.

The book was written with "the active co-operation" of Karrier Motors and the penultimate chapter, the one that will certainly be studied most closely by other manufacturers, deals specifically with the way Karrier is tackling type approval. The Dunstablebased manufacturer is unusual in having taken one route, TAC, for its domestically produced vehicles and the alternative route, MAC, for imported vehicles.

Chapter seven describes clearly what Karrier sees as the advantages and disadvantages of each route.

Some transport engineers I know would like to see Karrier's refreshingly open attitude spread to some government departments when it comes to releasing type approval data. But it is clear that Messrs Gibbins and Wilding had a good deal of co-operation from the DTp's staff at Bristol whom 0 thank for providing material from the DTp's own guide fa! "their unstinting help in unravelling some of the finei points of type approval, for checking the manuscript, am advising on content."

With two well respected transport journalists as its authors and this expert vettir should surprise no one to lea that the book is comprehensi and authoritative. Inevitably 4 or two of its eight chapters, si as the ones dealing with specification changes and thE details of applying for type approval, are rather heavy going, though undoubtedly II dullest part of the guide is its unimaginatively designed sombre dark brown cover wh with no identification on the 'spine will lose the volume on most bookshelves.

Nevertheless, the book is indeed a practical guide to th, subject and it is as well that II paper used is of a high qualit, for many copies will be likely have their pages frequently thumbed.
