What Mr. J. H. Stirk, East Midland Licensing Authority, described as " a very difficult case," • came before him, in Nottingham, on December 16. The inquiry was for the purpos6 of considering •whether, in view of alleged breaches of the conditions of her B licence, and subsequent convictions, the licence of Mrs. F. Williamson, of Markea, ton Street, Derby, should be revoked or suspended.
Mr. Stirk, who reserved his decision, is considering the matter of ownership of the vehicle. Mr. Curtis (of the Licensing Authority's staff) said that the case against Mrs. Williamson rested solely on the question as to whether the breaches were wilful.
There was a strong element of doubt in the minds of the Licensing Authority's officers as to whether. Mrs. Williamson made a false declaration in order to secure the B licence, and as to whether she was entitled to the licence irrespective of any decision
regardim,c' the breaches. The matter might also affect the A licence held by Mrs. Williamson.
She had, it was stated, undertaken the obligation of the licences solely in order to do her utmost for her sons, and a considerable measure of sympathy must go out to a woman of her A16
age. She is only the titular head of the concern. Mrs. Williamson had said that she knew nothing of certain offences. Although the licence was in her name, the vehicle belonged to her son.
Mr. F. W. Barnett, for Mts. Williamson, asked the court to transfer the licences to Mr. A. Edwards, her son, for a short probationary period.
Mr. Stirk -replied that he had great. sympathy with Mrs. Williamson, but there was more in this matter than had been heard at that inquiry.
