Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• More than a quarter of companies running vans have no Idea how much they spend on fuel, according to a survey conducted for Pith Vehicle Management.

Of the 200 company owners and managing directors polled, 26% said they had no accurate information on fuel costs.

PHH says this means as many as 10,000 companies are living in the dark as far as their fuel costs go.

Barry Chaplin, director of sales and account management at PHH, says: "At a time when fleet efficiency is paramount, especially given high fuel prices, it seems many van operators still have a lot of work to do."

The survey also found 59% of companies polled were unaware how vehicle excise duty could change and be linked to emissions, that 26% did not try to find the most competitive servicing and maintenance costs and that almost a third did not measure depreciation and maintenance costs in general.

Companies are reluctant to move to alternative fuels because of a lack of infrastructure, according to the survey, which also revealed a lack of driver training.

PH offers a range of services for between 25 and £1B per vehicle a month, Including cost and accident management.

The company also offers contract hire and purchasing.

The company currently manages about 16,000 vans, two thirds of which are on contract hire schemes.
