Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• ERF is cutting its workforce by around 5% and reducing its daily truck output in anticipation of a downturn in the UK truck market.

Managing director Cyril Acton says the 60 job losses represent "the trimming of the wick in response to a slowdown in orders." Acton hopes that early retirement and voluntary redundancy will take care of the majority of the job losses, which will otherwise be arranged on a last in, first out basis. Production at ERF's Sandbach works has been cut to 19 vehicles a day from 21, but Acton says there are no plans to drop any models from the ERF range. He predicts that total sales this year may exceed last year's total of 4,340.

Plans to improve ERF's distribution network are proceeding, and Acton maintains that ERF "is always looking to increase market share".

In the first seven months of the year ERF sales have risen by 26% to 2,568 trucks.
