MERCEDES-BENZ is to unveil two higher power V8 .engine variants for its topweight tractive units at next month's Frankfurt Show.
They will be fitted in models designated 1644 and 1635 and have maximum net power ratings (to the German DIN standard) of 440hp (1644) and 350hp (1635).
Details of the new models have not yet been released by Mercedes 'but the higher power engines are thought to have been developed from the twin.turbocharged and charge-cooled 380hp 0M422LA fitted to the 1638 (which is not available in the UK), and the 330hp twin-turbocharged 0M422A used in 1633 and 2033 models here.
Standard equipment on the 1644, and optional on the 1635, will be a new Mercedes electro-pneumatic gear changing system.
Like Scania's CAG system, this allows the driver to change gear with a short toggle lever which electrically controls air valves mounted on top of the gearbox.
But unlike Scania it seems that Mercedes will not use -an on-board microprocessor to advise on gear selection.
