DEPARTMENT of Transport officials have denied that Britain is preparing to do an about-turn on its opposition the "piggyback" rail systems that the EEC wants to subsidise.
If the plan for the system goes through, EEC funds would be used to set up a system of rail routes throughout Europe that would be used to carry lorries to a point near their destinations.
Reports this week said that the Foreign Office had warned that if the DTp continued in its opposition to the plan Britain stood to lose millions of pounds in EEC subsidies were denied by the DTp.
A spokesman said that the Transport Minister Norman Fowler had asked that the question be left open so that they could reconsider it if it was felt to be necessary.
The proposals for the systern of Eurotrains is due to be discussed at a meeting of the technical experts of the Nine EEC member States next month as part of a normal system of meetings prior to the ministers meeting in Brussels in November.
