VOUR contributor, Mr. E. Whitmore (The Commercial Motor, August 10, 1962), would be well advised to ensure that he will not incur a further fine by riding a motorcycle with an "insufficient" silencer.
The regulations relative to effective silencers have not been rescinded and in order to make the present position clear, it would be as well to quote, in full, Regulation 20 of the Motor Vehicle (Construction and Use) Regulations 1955, No. 482, which reads as follows:— " Silencers: Every vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine shall be fitted with a silencer, expansion chamber or other contrivance suitable and sufficient for reducing as far as may be reasonable the noise caused by the escape of the exhaust gases from the engine."
The problem is to decide what constitutes a "reasonable noise" and this will no doubt be the subject of consideration by the Committee recently set up to consider the noise problem as a whole.
It gives food for thought, however, as to whether or not a motorcycle if more effectively silenced would be a more lethal weapon than it is at present.
