rONCENTRATED production of off

the-road vehicles and abnormal-load transporters, which has been undertaken at the Basingstoke factory of Transport Equipment (Thornycroft). Ltd_ since its link with A.E.C., Ltd., will be reflected on the Thornycroft stand at Earls Court next month. Four basic models in current production will be displayed, consisting of Mighty Antar and Big Ben tractive units and Nubian 6 x6 and 4 X 4 vehicles.

The Mighty Antar

The Mighty Antar exhibit will have a Rolls Royce eight cylinder 16.2 litre supercharged diesel engine, the gross output of which is 333 b.h.p., driving through a four-speed main gearbox and three-speed auxiliary box to the doubledrive rear bogie. This 6 X 4 design has an unladen weight of approximately 21 tons and will be seen on Dunlop PowerGrip 14.00-24 (20-ply) cross-country tyres. It will have a Thornycroft-built

cab. Darlington P26 winch and HandsEngland eXtra-heavy-duty fifth wheel.

The Big Ben tractive unit will be a 6 x 6 model for oilfields use, powered by a Thorn ycroft 11,33-litre turbocharged diesel developing 230 b.h.p. This vehicle also will have a 12-speed transmission and will be fitted with Michelin 16.00-20 "Sahara X" tyres. This version of the Big Ben can operate at a gross train weight of 60 tons, and will be fitted with a Thomycroft plastics cab.

A Rolls-Royce B81 eight-cylinder 199-b.h.p, petrol engine powers the Nubian 6 x 6 exhibit, which will be exhibited as a fire-crash tender with Pyrene fully enclosed body and Pyrene Mark 6T fire-fighting equipment. The 4 x 4 Nubian on show will be a similar version to that exhibited at the Scottish Motor Show last year in that it will be powered by an .A.E.C. AV410 125-blip. diesel engine. A five-speed constantmesh gearbox will be fitted, together with a two-speed transfer box.
