A FULL-SIZE working model of their .1-1. new Series 30 D double-drive tandem bogie is to be the main feature of the Eaton Axles, Ltd., stand at the Commercial Motor Show.. The bogie has been available to manufacturers for some time and is employed on at least two new models to be introduced at the Show.
Single-speed, two-speed and planetary double-reduction forms are available. In all cases, the drive is transmitted through helical gears to the forward spiral bevelgear set. In direct line with the input flange is the third or inter-axle differential, and it is through this unit that the drive is equally divided between forward and rear axles.
The inter-axle differential can he locked to give positive drive to both axles for maximum traction in difficult conditions.
Ratios available for the Series 30 D bogies are: 5.14, 5.57, 6.14, 6.50 or 7.17 in the DS, single-speed; 5.14/7.15, 5.57/ 7.75, 6.14/8.54, 6.50/9.04 or 7.17/9.97 in the DT, two-speed, and 7.15, 7.75, 8.54, 9.04, 9.97 in the DP, planetary doublereduction versions. Gross weight-rating capacities to 78,000 lb, (35 tons approximately) are obtainable.
Petrol Price Reductions
FOLLOWING last week's announcement of regular grade petrol price reductions by Esso Petroleum Co.. Ltd., other major petrol companies have accordingly lowered the price of their regular grades. Esso, Shell-Mex and D.P., Total, Power, Dominion, Cleveland, Regent and Fina regular grade prices aro now: inner zone. 4s. 4d., outer zone, 4s. 43d., and general zone, 4s. 5d. Following Esso's example, Fina and Cleveland have also reduced the price of their mixture grade by id.
BELFAST'S NEW £7,000 BUS ON THE WAY
THE first of the new Daimler Fleetline L buses to replace trolleybuses in Belfast will be handed over to Belfast Corporation transport departmenton August 29.
Contracts have been placed for 88 ,double-decker buses, which cost in the region of £7,000 each, and the bodies are being made by M. H. Cars, Ltd.. Belfast. The new vehicles are expected to be delivered at the rate of eight per month.
MOVE TO BAN SMOKING ON DUNDEE BUSES FAILS A MOVE to ban smoking on Dundee .1-1 Corporation buses was Ofeated at a meeting of the transport committee last week. Double-decked buses comprise the bulk of the city's fleet and, at the moment, smoking is permitted on the upper deck. The move to ban smoking was led by Hon. Treasurer Peter Doig, who is himself a non-smoker. He said that it was no use spending a lot of money implementing a Clean Air Act when, on the top deck of buses, they were condoning an atmosphere far worse than anything in the city.
