Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AST week Yorkshire Traffiz Commissioners granted an application by the Samuel Ledgard group of companies to increase and revise fares on certain stage carriage services, which, said Mr. J. W. Mellor for the applicants, were needed due to rising costs and will bring in between £14,000 and £15,000 in a full year.

He said it was proposed to introduce a minimum fare of 3d, for the first mile. Fourpenny fares to remain unchanged, 43d. fares to be increased by 3d., and fares from 5d. to 3s. lid, to be increased by ld. He said the company operated routes in common with West Yorkshire Road Car Co., Ltd., and fares on these services would be brought into line with those of the West Yorkshire company.

There were also eight stage carriage services operated wholly or in part in common with Leeds City Transport Dept. The company would not increase fares on these routes as Leeds Corporation had not applied for an increase. Mr. Mellor added, "If Leeds would increase its fares, this would bring in 113,000 of much needed additional revenue to the applicants."

Major F. E. Eastwood, the chairman, said the application was a "more than reasonable one."
