hunt for M3 bridge killer

• Surrey police hunting the killer of truck driver Michael Little, who was hit by an object thrown through his windscreen (CM 27 March-2 April), are taking DNA swabs from local men.

'Intelligence-led' screening is being carried out on targeted people after police obtained forensic evidence pertaining to the case. DCI Graham Hill, senior investigating officer for Surrey police, says: "At this stage we are unable to confirm what that forensic evidence is for operational reasons."

Little, who was 53 and from Hornchurch, died of heart failure caused by a blow to the chest after the object was thrown from a footbridge over the M3 in Camberley. Police praised Little's ability to control his 44-tonne truck, as he averted a possible accident by pulling over on to the hard shoulder before he collapsed and died.

His employer Ford is offering a £25,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of those responsible for Little's murder.

• Earlier this month, another truck driver was the victim of a similar attack as he drove onto the A2. The Sainsbury's driver narrowly escaped injury when a brick was thrown at his windscreen. Plumstead CID detective sergeant Andy Cotton said police officers had visited local schools to point out the consequences of such actions. "We could be talking about attempted murder," he says.

He adds that he would support any Ideas to thwart brick-throwing attempts from foot-bridges, such as protective meshing.
