Details of a Strachan and Drown Completely Self-contained Device which Possesses Many Novel and Practicable Features.
rk NE of the most popular balanced Ns/windows is that constructed by Messrs. Strachan and Brown, Wales Farm Road, London, W.3. This is now built entirely in drawn steel and can be obtained in any finish. What, to our mind, is the most important feature is that the window can be taken out by merely unscrewing a channel secured to
each pillar, as the mechanism is entirely in the frame and it is quite un-necessary to disturb any other part of the body, such as garnish rails or
panelling. .
At each bottom corner of the windew frame is a neat'contit' iner about square, within which is a drum containing a spring of the clock type. This drum is connected by a phosphor-bronze stranded wire to a point about half-Was up the channel in which the window runs. Thus when the window is pushed down the spring is, wound up and balances it. A key and a ratchet device permit adjustment of the strength Of each spring.
The locking is effected at each side by a piece of light channel connected by links to a smaller piece of channel secured to the frame. An enclosed compression spring between each pair of channels forces them apart and forms a most effective lock which entirely prevents rattle. To release the window, a finger grip is provided at the centre, and this causes cams at the sides to force the moving channels in towards those which are fixed. The arrangement is simple and effective.
It has been quite interesting to follow the gradual development of the Strachan window and to note the increase in efficiency and simplicity 'obtained in each model. That which we have .just described is proving so successfulthat orders are being received from many users outside this country, this beli'es quite apart from a very considerable home trade.
