Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A new national hauliers' pressure group has been set up following the decision by the North Midlands Hauliers Association to adopt a constitution and accept members from around the country (CM 16 August).

The National Hauliers Association will be more of an "action group" and will "have more teeth" than existing bodies such as the Road Haulage Association, says national secretary, Malcolm White. Its main objective will be to campaign for better rates.

The NHA has almost 500 members, and this is growing weekly, claims White. He hopes to recruit most of the owner-operators in the UK; annual subscriptions are .225.

White denies that the new organisation will compete for members with the RHA: "Obviously we cannot claim to have as many experts as the RHA but they are more about support," he says. "We hope to get immediate and obvious results."

The group held its first meeting last week, and spoke to 'rransport Minister Patrick McLoughlin. He promised to consult the NHA over legislation, says White.
