THE HARDSTAFF GROUP has had its Cummins Westport C Gas Plus Engine approved by the Energy Saving Trust for inclusion in the Powershift Register — the first time an 18tonner has been included.

Fuel savings are said to be 30% compared with conventional diesels for a cost of about £17,000 per vehicle depending on specification — £9,000 of which is met by the PowerShift grant.

Using the Paccar (Foden/Daf) chassis, it meets Euro-4 running on CNG (compressed natural gas). Power outputs range from 250hp to 280hp with torque levels between 894-1,152Nm.The engine is designed for 12-26-tonne vehi cies working in urban and suburban distribution markets where vehicle pollution is greatest.

Hardstaff director Trevor Fletcher says: "The introduction of this vehicle will naturally increase the development of town and city gas stations and will assist in promoting natural gas as a viable option for other vehicle users."
