Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TRAFFIC moved by professional hauliers has grown quicker in recent years than the amount carried by own-account operators.

These figures are among the vast number included in "The transport of goods by road in Great Britain" statistics issued by the Department of Transport.

Tonne-kilometres in billions for public haulage went up from 42.8 in 1966 to 60.1 in 1976; the "mainly ownaccount" statistics were 30.4 in 1966 and 35.5 in 1976.

Other statistics for last year include for the two modes: Average length of haul 75.3km and 49.5km respectively; 52.5 per cent of goods moved (50.2000m tonne-kilometres) were carried by vehicles of over 28 tons gross weight.

The figures for last quarter of 1976 show increases in every respect except one over those of the other three quarters, suggesting that when the 1977 figures come out they, too, may show an upward trend.

The exception was the own-account sector in the second quarter.
