AN additional model in the 500 Series has been announced by Dodge Bros. (Britain) Ltd. This carries the designation K1000 and is designed for a gross weight rating of 16 tons.
The model marks a departure from the normal 500 Series by having a Perkins 6.354 engine as the only power unit available; on all other chassis in the range a Chrysler /Cummins V6 or VS is standard and the only rigids available with the Perkins 6.354 have been those with a gross rating of 15 tons or less. The K1000 is, in effect, a lower-powered version of the K1100 16-tonner. a model in which the Perkins unit was not originally offered. Three wheelbases are available-12 ft. 3 in., 17 ft. 1 in., and 19 ft. 1 in.—and the engine drives through a five-speed constant-mesh gearbox to a two-speed axle.
Braking is by a full-air system with separate circuits for the front and rear axles and the handbrake is power-assisted from a separate air circuit. This is another aspect where the K1000 differs from the other 500 Series rigids with a gross weight of 16 tons or over which have doublediaphragm actuators all round to provide a secondary system which is a duplication of the main system.
Prices for the K1000 start at £2,460, which includes the Dodge all-steel tilt cab.
