Temperature is the enemy for pad life and significant pad wear happens at 400°C to 500°C admits Honeywell Jurid's technical director, Stefan Ernesti. "Most brake applications occur when the pad is at 100°C to 300 °C; and cheaper friction materials will show a drop in performance at these lower temperatures."

Brake-makers' standard test system for friction materials includes the ISO 15484 wear test. The tests are done at 100°C, 300°C and 500°C and at 40, 60. 80, 150, 120 and 180kph. Some pads require bedding in before maximum performance is achieved, but Jurid pads incorporate Greencoat strips that deliver maximum performance and don't need to bed in.
