Euro frustration

Imust admit to feeling more than a little disheartened on reading your main news story in this week's Commercial Motor ("EU blocks plan for a 48Iuhaulage week" 16-22 Oct). It seems to me that we are still so far away from European harmony and understanding in the road transport field that it defies belief.

We "mere mortals" are entrusting the politicians across Europe with the task of ensuring a smooth coming together of policy Yes, I know that each country wants a fair deal for themselves and that it is only expected of them to do so, but the reality is a selfishness that refuses to take in consideration for others' circumstances.

The arguments for and against the imposition of a 48-hour haulage week are not what my anger is directed at...it's the way in which member countries split themselves into camps of for, against and don't really

care! Come on, it's people's livelihoods at stake here! They seem to affect a lack of interest in finalising policy. Why commit yourself when a shrug of the shoulders will do, they seem to say.

Also, you report on the EV's new legislation on demonstrating good financial standing. For some of us, these new rates are going to he too much. There are times when the cash just isn't there.

No wonder there are so many people who are antiEurope. It frustrates the hell out of me.
