THE GREATER London Council has found an unlikely ally in tl Freight Transport Association on the issue of tolls for vehicles usii the Dartford Tunnel.

In a statement issued last week, GLC transport committee vice chair Paul Moore voiced the council's regret at the Government's refusal to abolish tolls on the tunnel, which forms part of the M25 London orbital route.

He said that Essex and Kent County Councils had joined with the GLC in pressing for a change of policy on tolls, and said: "The Government is splashing £700m on the M25, yet it is too mean to do the job properly and abolish the tolls. This is bound to result in some lorry operators choos ing to save money and cot into London."

Mr Moore said that Londonf are "fed up with heavy lorr thundering along roads tote unsuitable to carry them." A he went on: "Lorries bri danger, dirt and din, and 1 more that can be persuaded take the M25 around London better."

The FTA is within weeks of t flouncing a major change in policy towards tolls, and press the Government to abol them.

A spokesman told CM that 1 FTA is aware of the widesprE belief that tolls do deter soi drivers from using the Dartft Tunnel, and that some go stead by the Blackwall Tunr
