Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

LEYLAND has unveiled its successor to the Boxer in a further extention of the T45 family.

Production of the new models, called Freighter, will start in January 1983 with the full range of chassis for the 10 to 16-ton market sector being launched progressively over the first six months of the year.

The latest five Freighter derivatives are nominally rated at 11, 12.5, 13.5, 14.5 and 16.26 tonnes and are fitted with naturally aspirated or turbocharged versions of the six-cylinder 98-Series engine.

These are in addition to the two Freighter models fitted with the Leyland 400-Series engine announced at the 1981 Scottish Motor Show.

The 6.98 NV produces 89kW (106bhp) at 2,600rpm compared with the 102kW (137bhp) of the turbocharged 6.98TV running at 2,50Orpm.

Maximum torque is 345Nm (254 Ibft) for the NV and 457Nm (377 Ibft) for the TV both at one engine speed of 1,650rpm.

Two gearboxes cover the range — the Turner T5-300 and the ZF S6-36, with the former being a five-speed unit with synchromesh on the top four ratios and the latter a six-speed full synchromesh design.

It was intended originally for the ZF gearbox to be built under licence at the old Albion factory but currency fluctuation made this uneconomic and so the box is imported complete.

All turbocharged models are fitted with the ZF gearbox and, with one exception, all naturally aspirated derivatives are matched to the Turner unit.

The exception is the naturally aspirated 14.5 tonner which takes the ZF gearbox. Both the Turner and ZF units can be specified with either a direct or overdrive top.

Taking the 12.5 tonne chassis as an example, the 4.34m (14ft 3in) wheelbase Freighter with the naturally aspirated 98-Series engine has a kerb weight of 3.8 tonnes (3 tons 15cwt).

In total, the Freighter range now includes nearly 50 engine/ gearbox/wheelbase options for the 11 to 16-ton sector.

All the latest Freighter variants feature the slim version of the C40 cab designated the C4OL which tilts hydraulically to 54° for component access.

Routine access items such as the header tank, oil filler and dipstick are mounted behind the cab opposite the air filter.
