• Details of a new "shaftless" safety steering column, suitable for most vans as well as cars, have been. announced by Accles and Pollock Ltd, Oldbury, Worcs.
In this application the conventional central shaft is replaced by an energy-absorbing convoluted tube, light in weight and having a high structural strength under torque loading. The tube assembly is produced by a "close and stretch" process developed by the Koppy Tool Corporation, USA, from whom A & P holds a world-wide licence. Consistent collapse characteristics, with fast and economical production capabilities, are claimed for the convoluted tube concept.
