• In Lady Sharp's report "Transport Planning: the men for the job" published earlier this year she advocated the establishment of a centre for the advanced training of urban transport planners, ideally covering land use planning as well. This week the Government announced that it had approached universities to ask whether they were interested in the idea and, if so, how best the scheme might be organized.
The purpose would be to train together people from the various professions to play a more effective part in the strategic planning and management of urban transport. Provision of about 100 places, mostly for men with professional experience, is envisaged.
