THE British Standards Institute is 1 hoping to receive plenty of comments, especially from road transport interests, on the draft Standard for freight containers which has been circulated to interested bodies; they have been asked io comment by November 10.
From the six 8-ft. by 8-ft. modular containers and three uniform-height metric-size containers recommended by the International Standards Organization (The Commercial Motor, July 10), the B.S.I. technical committee has selected three sizes of 8-ft. by 8-ft. modular and one metric; and it has (though not specifically on road haulage initiative) added a 17-ft.-long container in the 8-ft. by 8-ft. bracket.
The British Standard thus covers 6-ft. by 8-ft. cross-section containers in lengths of 10 ft., 17 ft., 20 ft. and 30 ft. and One " metric " container 2-1 m, high and 2.1 m. by 2.4 m. in width and length.
The Standard also encourages a trend away from end-loading towards sideloading in freight containers, and this would certainly be an advisable course where two containers are to he carried on a single road vehicle, to allow for loading/unloading where lifting gear is lacking.
The BSI committee hopes to discuss the comments from organizations at a December meeting.
