LAST week the Excise duty of Is, 9d. per gallon on indigenous fuels, which include benzoic and shale oil, was reduced to Is. 3d. Thus the difference between this tax and that of 2s. 6d. on imported hydrocarbon oils is raised to Is. 3d. a gallon. I3enzole is used to a considerable extent to enrich and give anti-knock value to motor spirit, whilst shale oil is used largely in Scotland for fuelling large bus fleets.
It is not to be expected that the change will alter the selling price of motor fuel with which benzoic is mixed, as the reduction in tax would probably not amount to more than id. per gallon of such mixtures
