CONCERN regarding the standard of maintenance of goods vehicles was expressed by the West Midland Licensing Authority, Mr. W. P. James, when he read a paper to the Institute of Traffic Administration in Birmingham, last week. Of 6,842 vehicles examined in the area during the year ended September 30, 1953, 3,323 were found unfit.

In the same period, applications had been received for 299 A licences, 541 A-contract licences, 2,092 B licences and 8,229 C licences. There were 7,400 passenger vehicles in the area out of a national total of 68,000 vehicles. Applications for public service vehicle drivers' licences numbered 5,500 and 365 were refused.
