America Buys Foreign Tractors.

Despite the large home industry, 1,55/ foreign-made tractors, valued at £147,957, were imported into the United States during the six months ended June last, compared with 1,344 machines (£132,450) in the corresponding half of 1935.

First Buses in the Bahamas.

The first passenger motor vehicles of any type to operate in the Bahamas will be supplied by the Associated Equipment Co., Ltd. The newly formed Nassau Transportation Co_ has purchased three Regal petrolengined single-deckers for service in New Providence, the island in which the capital is situated. The vehicles `will be 30-seaters and provide accommodation for 12 white persons in the front portion and for 18'. natives at the rear.

An Inexpensive Arc Welder for the Repairer.

A portable arc welding plant is being marketed by Messrs. W. T. Driver, 10, Store Street, London, W.C.1. It is offered for £21, a figure within the scope of almost every commercialvehicle operator or repairer, for which class of user it is intended.

It can be run from mains 50-cycle a.c. at 110 volts or 220 volts, and the complete outfit weighs only 110 lb. Controls are provided for four heats and the maximum output at the electrodes is 90 amps. at 30 volts. It is

claimed to be capable of melting per hour 1100 ins. of On. welding rod at a cost of 21d. to 410, per hour.

Young Accumulator New Depot.

The Young Accumulator Co. (1929), Ltd., has opened a new sales and service depot at 2, Lofthouse Court, King Street West, Manchester. It is under the supervision of its chief sales engineer, Mr. A. Lawles.

U.D.T. Opens New Branch.

United Dominions Trust, Ltd., opened a new branch at Leicester, on Monday last. It is at 3, Granby Street, and is the 16th to be opened in various important centres in the United Kingdom. Mr. K. G. P. Hendrie is the branch manager. WORLD'S LARGEST SMOKELESS FUEL PLANT.

An annual output of 12,000,000 gallons of petrol and oil, and 380,000 tons of smokeless fuel can, it is claimed, now be maintained by Low Temperature Carbdnisation, Ltd., the latest plant of which, at Bolsover, Derbyshire—said to be the largest of its kind in the world—commenced operations on Tuesday of last week. Since 1927 the company has carbonized some 2,000,91)0 tons of coal, yielding 180,000 tons of coal-oil and petrol. The retorts at Bolsover number 288, and are capable of de4ling with 500 tons of coal per day. Entirely new features are incorporated in this plant, and the British steel industry has produced the special alloys required for the retorts.

Breconshire R2ad " Strike" Threatened.

13reconshire Roads Committee has decided definitely to abandon its fouryear road-improvement plan unless the Ministry of Transport will make an 85 per cent. grant. The Ministry has offered maximum grants of 60 per cent. for Class I and 50 per cent. for Class II roads.

• The case of the roads committee is that the county is used as a corridor for through traffic and cannot afford to pay 40 per cent, of the big sum involved ia the scheme.

• Breconshire. is the second of the Welsh rural counties to take this step.
