"In Southampton it's just terrible," he adds. Many parking areas have been shut down and replaced by housing or football car parks. Now there's nothing whatsoever in the town for lorry drivers.
"I feel sorry for the poor sods who are out three or four nights a week. If you go onto the Continent there are far more rest areas and there's a different attitude completely It's really appalling in this country."
Millard echoes the views of other panel members that the shortage of space is exacerbated by severe congestion. So a driver on the M25 might think he has ample time to reach the next service area in time for his scheduled break but traffic is so heavy he is forced to pull off and find somewhere to park "The result of all this is that drivers end up in lay-bys where it stinks because people pee everywhere and criminals come along and pinch their diesel."
