ROCK WELL CVC's £114 million manufacturing facility at Catneri in Italy began production two years ago with the first of a new modular range of single-reduction hypoid axles.
Biggest in the range is the U-180E, which is designed for gross train weights of up to 48 tonnes and has one of the fistest ratios currently available in Europe. Its low noise levels and reliability makes it suited to longdistance haulage.
The unit is now fitted as standard on Iveco's Turbostar, where it matches its 3I3kW and 248kW (42(1 and 330hp) high-torque, low-speed engines and direct-drive transmissions.
Ford, Seddon Atkinson and ERF have also taken delivery of the new axles in the UK.
Volvo, however, chose the new P140E hypoid axle with a gross train weight capacity of 25 tonnes for these variants of the EL614.
For 1986 Rockwell has produced a range of wide-track single-reduction hypoid tandem axles. 'Hiese include the SR MO heavy-duty tandem axle designed to meet 20-tonne housing loads but where the train weight is limited to 45 tonnes. It is available with optional lightweight aluminium wheel end and carrier components.
The SRHD also on display is a lighter replacement for the previous SSHD model, saving 73kg and even more if optional aluminium hubs are specified. It has a design application of 20 tonnes and housing load for up to 55 tonnes GCW.
