MORE POWERFUL tractive unit engines and the revised LT range make up the top and bottom ends of MANVW's Glasgow commercial vehicle show exhibits.

MAN's 11.4-litre 206kW (280hp) and 235kW (320hp) engines have been replaced by the new turbocharged and charge-cooled 213kW (2904) and 243kW (330hp) 12-litre units.

While maximum torque On the 213kW engine is boosted to 1,200Nm (885 lbft), the 243kW engine retains its predecessor's maximum torque of 1,350Nm (996 Ibit).

The 243kW engine can be seen in three MAN tractive units. The first, a 3.6m wheelbase 20.331 6x2 twin-steer artic, is on MAN's show stand. The vehicle is finished in the colours of IThnean Adams of Grangemouth. The two others — a 3.8m wheelbase 6x2 22.331, and a 4X2 16.331 — can be seen at MAN-VW's display at Beaufort 'Frocks in Petershill Road, Glasgow.

The new engines have the same bore, stroke and four nozzle injectors as the 265kW (356hp) unit used in the 19.361 and 22.361, although they do not have the bigger engines' tuned induction resonance, normally used on MA N's large-displacement truck engines.

MAN has also improved noise levels on its cab with better partitioning of the engine compartment, a sound absorbing coating 00 the oil pan and redesigned air induction and exhaust systems.

Also on the stand is a 5.9m wheelbase 16.17(1 4x2 rigid with a light alloy BoaHoy Linkliner body. It is liveried in Charthire Services colours. (A roadtest on the 16.170 appears in CM, Noveniber 9).

The revised LT range is shown in the form of a LT35 diesel chassis cab, fitted with a glass reinforced plastic box van body with light alloy racking for McGhee and Sons.

Completing the company's show lineup is a static display of the Synchro 4x4 Transporter van driveline. The all-wheel drive Synchro will he launched in the UK early next year and uses an unusual viscous coupling patented by FF Developments of Coventry, adapted for the Transporter by Volkswagen and Steyr-Daimler-Pilch of Austria.
