MERCEDES-BENZ was the only European coach builder to exhibit at the Tokyo Motor Show.
It exhibited a Mannheimbuilt 030 3 RHD integral coach and intends to sell 15 to 20 a year in Japan.
Japanese manufacturers launched their latest integral coach designs which put them firmly on a par with their European counterparts.
Fuso (Mitsubishi) launched its new Aero range of buses and coaches, including the Aero Star single-deck urban bus, the Aero Midi 7m transverse rear-engined midicoach, the Piero Bus 12m touring coach and the threeaxle high-tloor Aero Queen and double-deck Aero King top-of-the-range models.
Hum has introduced a new Blue Ribbon 3.55m high 12m coach powered by a rearmounted 246kW (330hp) V8 engine. Fuso and Hino coaches have electro-pneunianeatly controlled gearboxes.
General Motors' Japanese associate lsuzu revealed a complete range of midi and full-length coaches, and Nissan Diesel showed its Space Wing three-axle high-floor coach powered by a 276kW (370hp) 19-litre V10 engine rated to produce 370hp.
Coachbuilders exhibiting at the show included Fuji, Kawasaki, Kitamura, and Nishi Van Hool, Kiissbohrer, Neoplan and Drogmoller have already supplied coaches to Japanese operators and Volvo has supplied articulated bus chassis.
