COACH drivers are to be banned from using hand-held microphones to give running commentaries.
Transport IVIinister Lynda Chalker is to hold talks soon to amend the 1iighway Code. She told MPs in a debate on road safety that the Government is trying to persuade drivers to concentrate better and to drive with undivided attention.
Microphones and road telephones cause a problem and die Government has decided that stronger action is needed because of the risks involved.
The changes to the Highway Code envisaged would state that drivers should not use hand-held microphones while their vehicles are nmving and that they should only speak into other types of microphone when road conditions are such that their attention would nor be distracted.
Junior Transport Minister Ilavid Mitchell 11.1, already
told the Bus and Coach Council that the Department will be enforcing the existing PSV conduct regulations banning coach drivers from giving sustained sightseeing co llllll entaries.
It is propsed to alter the regulation to permit brief announcements to passengers as well as operational emergency communications. But there will he a specific ban on sustained and regular sightseeing commentaries.
