ROUND 1.()NI)ON sightseeing tours have been banned from starting in the morning or evening rush hours.
Restrictions have been iiiposed by the Metropolitaii Traffic Commissioners to try to balance the needs of the operators and traffic management in Central London.
In granting ;ipplications by five sightseeing tour operators. the Commissioners
have imposed standard conditi011S on all the licences and iii
most cases have also restricted the number of departures and the number of vehicles.
London Sightseeing Tours, Maybury and Sons (Coaches), Vintage Bus Company, Eb dons Coaches and London Country Bus Services sought authority to operate from ter minals at Piccadilly, Speaker's Corner, Park Lane, Haymar ket, Great Cumberland Place, Trafalgar Square, Victoria Street, Grosvenor Gardens and Kensington Road.
Most of these were opposed by the Greater London Council, the City of Westminster and the Metropolitan Police.
The objections included the proximity to bus stops, in terference with fixed traffic signalling equipment, congestion, danger to passengers and pedestrians, and interference with the LISC of nearby commercial property.
The Commissioners said they acknowledged the prob
lems of traffic regulation in London and, at times, the conflicting demands of sightseeing tours.
