SERVICE to customers has been improved .by a new national distribution centre for electrical goods, sales of which are expected to reach 1511 million next year, officially opened last week at Backmills, Northampton.
The 7,500m2 warehouse is operated by Lex Systemline for Rowenta and Sunbeam, both subsidiaries ofAllegheny International, of Pittsburg, USA, the world's biggest maker of small electrical appliances.
The contract requires five Mercedes-Benz 13-tonne vans on scheduled services planned by computer. Outlying areas are supplied by Lex Wilkinson's Expressline three-day service, and emergency stock orders can be handled by the Nighdine next-day service.
Fifty-five per cent of customers receive their orders in three days and the remainder iii five days.
Goods in transit by Expressline and Nightline are monitored by the Wilkoritrol computerised parcels-trackMg system. Computers, control operations throughout the warehouse directing fork trucks to any of the 3,466 racked pallet spaces and keeping a constant check on stock.
The new depot replaces two, one at Higham Ferrers and the other at Crick, both in Northamptonshire.
