A FIERCE attack on the drivers of fleets run by food re tailers was made by a Tory MP in the Commons last week.
Salisbury MP Robert Key singled out Rank Hovis, Sainsbury's and Ski Yoghurt For particular criticism, al though he made clear that his criticisms covered many lorry drivers.
Speaking in the debate on road safety, Key said he some times wondered whether lorry drivers knew the speed limits. "I cannot remember when I last saw a heavy lorry driving at less than 40mph on our country roads in Wiltshire."
Although most commercial drivers were of high quality, Key said there was an argument for creating a new of fence of driving in an intimidating manner because people were threatened by heavy lorries.
The idea of fitting heavy lorries with small lights so that the drivers could tell motorists behind them when it was safe to overtake would be largely redundant in Britain as it was usually the lorry overtaking.
Villagers in his constituency were used to seeing lorries rumbling through on a regu lar basis and could tell him that at a certain moment huge lorries bearing the names of well-known shops and general stores would be thundering through their villages.
"Let me be specific. Rank Hovis's four flour tankers go in convoy. Good • food may cost less at Sainsbury's but between Sainsbury's shops it costs a great deal of human misery suffered by my constituents, who are shaken by their juggernauts."
Ski Yoghurts was a lovely product but when its lorries carrying it thundered up and down local roads, he could not see the good image of the product. "The Amey Roadstone Corporation is in a good business, breaking up the roads so that it could replace them later."
