A TOTAL of 24 vehicles were trans ferred froni contract A to B licence by the deputy Yorkshire . Licensing Authority, Mr. J. H. E. .Randolph, at Leeds on Friday. The applicant, Cutts and Fletcher Ltd., considered that a B licence would be . more flexible and wanted the units to carry coal and coke for William Shaw and Sons (Huddersfield). Ltd., and the Midland Coal Co. (Manchester) Ltd., as required. Also salt from Winsford for Builders Supply (Wakefield) Ltd., for delivery' in Yorkshire. At present 12 vehicles were on Contract to William Shaw and 1.2 to the Midland Coat Co. "

In evidence, Mr. J. Cutts, a director of the applicant company, produced schedules which gave details of earnings and sub-contracting. All the fleet was fully employed. The contract vehicles were primarily engaged in _delivering coal' and coke Co gas Works and power stations but sometimes delays occurred and the company had difficulty in moving a week's allocation of coal. if any were left it ultimately became lost traffic. Some of the units Were equipped with radio telephones, and this, combined with the added flexibility of a B licence, would avoid some of these delays and losses in traffic.:

The local authorities in the West Riding used rock salt for road clearance during the winter, continued Mr. Cutts. and the company wished to carry. this from Winsford, Cheshire, for Builders Supply (Wakefield) Ltd.

Giving his decision, Mr. Randolph said that most of the evidence had been contained in the schedules submitted and it was obvious that the present contract arrangements were not of a satisfactory nature.

THOMAS MOTOR TOURS, of 1

Newark, objected at a sitting of the East Midlands Traffic Conimissioners last week to an application by another Newark company,,W. Gash and Sian Ltd., to run excursion tours for old people to six south coast resorts. The company applied for picking-up points in six villages south of Newark.

Thomas applied for permission to run a feeder service through these villages to join its tours at Newark. Objections came from Gash, Barton Transport Ltd., of Chilwell, and Trent Motor Traction Co. Ltd., of Nottingham. An application by Thomas to run an excursion from Newark to Southsea was not opposed.

The chairman of the Commissioners, Mr. C. R. Hodgson, announcing that a decision would be reserved, assured old people from the villages that one or the other of the operators would be allowed to carry out a service along the lines set out in the applications.
