The axle member (1) has pivoted to it a stout leaf-spring (2) the other end of which is pivoted about a frame crossmember (3). Up-and-down motion is not retarded in any way, owing to the plane of the pivots, but any tendency to roll is resisted because it tends to twist the spring.

The tool is power-operated by coinmessed air. It consists of a piston and cylinder each of which carries a curved nose (1); the tool being held by a
handle (2). In operation,. the• curved ends are placed between the beads of the tyre, and the air is admitted to the' cylinder by a trigger-valve (3)., .
The piston is driven along the, cylinder, forcing the tyre open with no effort on the part of the operator. The tool remains in the open position until a thumboperated exhaust valve (not shown) is opened, after which the piston is returned by a spring shown at 4.
