A motor engineer was recently charged at Brigg, at the instance of the East Midland Licensing Authority, for " using " an unlicensed lorry for the carriage of beet.

The defendant contended that he was not the " user" of the vehicle, in that he was merely running it for a friend who was in hospital. The driver, however, appeared to consider the defendant as his employer. The magistrates took the Same view, but, as there was room for misunderstanding in the matter, they decided not to inflict a heavy fine. Defendant had to pay £1. including costs.
