• Central Railway is bidding to get the go-ahead from Transport Secretary Sir George Young for a £3bn 180-mile freight railway line linking the Midlands to the Channel Tunnel.
• The Association of Chief Police Officers says it may produce guidelines for the 11 police forces which have contracted out their rescue and recovery work. This follows a High Court ruling that some practices of Greater Manchester Police Authority and its contractors, AA Developments, were illegal.
• A Dutch haulier who fell asleep at the wheel, causing a crash with another lorry on the Al 4 in Suffolk, has been fined £280 with £20 costs. Johannes Hamans admitted driving without due care and attention and foiling to take rest breaks when he appeared before
Stowmarket magistrates.
• A leaflet outlining the risks of truck theft and how best to prevent it has been published by the Road Haulage Association's Southern and Eastern Regional Office. The leaflet is free. Contact: 01733 261131.
• The recently privatised English, Welsh and Scottish Railway is to pick up several hundred tonnes of traffic a week from Gilbraith Transtore's rail terminal at Blackburn after Railfreight Distribution's decision to pull out of the operation because of low traffic volumes.
• Attendance figures for last week's IRTE '96 were up 15% on last year's total, to 7,500. IRTE '97 will be held at the Telford International Centre on 14-16 May.
• CV production in April was up 11 on 1995: there has also been a steady increase every month this year.
