• The new 268kW Turbostar tractive unit and bigger volume Daily vans, unveiled at the Turin show (CM 2 May), are soon to become available in the UK, and many of the braking system, axle and suspension revisions applied to the new disc braked Cargos (see Vehicles Extra, page 24) will apply to Cargos up to 15 tonnes GVW.

Iveco Ford will be taking 3,000 operators and dealers to its Langley plant over the next five weeks to show them the new models.

The 190.36 Turbostar 4x 2 tractive unit is scheduled to go on sale in July, and it is likely that by the end of this year it will have replaced the 283kW, non-Turbostar (unified T cab) 190.38. This uses the same vee-eight turbocharged, 17 litre engine as the more powerful 190.42 tractive unit, but the 190.36 is powered by

an uprated air-to-water chargecooled version of the 14 litre, in-line six cylinder unit which in non-charge-cooled form drives the 190.30 and 220.30 models.

The 8210.42 engine in the 190.36 is rated at 268kW at 1,800rpm to EEC 80/1269 and its maximum torque is 1,766Nm at 1,000rpm. This engine is an updated version of the one used in 246kW Turbostars which, surprisingly, have never been made available in the UK.

The latest Daily van model is a 4.5 and 4.9-tonne GVW version called the Maxi, which has a longer wheelbase and greater load volume than its predecessors. It will go on sale in the UK in September, says Iveco Ford.

The Maxi Daily has a 3,950mm wheelbase and 15.4m3 of load space compared with the 3.2m-wheelbase Daily's 12m3.

It seems likely that the 3.2m-wheelbase van will continue to be sold alongside its bigger brother, at least until the end of this year. The Maxi Daily also has a wider side door and greater width between its wheel arches. The Maxi will cost £700 more than a standard Daily.
