HAULAGE firm chief was found guilty at Perth Sheriff Court last meek of operating an £8,000 milk fraud.
Alastair Campbell, of Buchan 'lace, Glenrothes, Fife had delied obtaining more than two rillion litres of skimmed milk 'rom dairies in Angus, 'erthshire and Fife by false )retences. But following a threeJay trial, a jury unanimously deided that he obtained the milk 'me or at a low subsidised cost Dy falsely telling the dairies it Nould be used as pig feed.
Instead of delivering it to pig 'armers, he sold it to Aberdeen & District Milk Marketing Board, Bucksburn, Aberdeen, at the full commercial price. He was finally caught after operating the scheme for two-and-a-half years.
In evidence, Campbell agreed that milk which he had got free or for which he paid 1p a gallon was resold to the Aberdeen board for up to ten pence a gallon. But he denied that he made excessive profits and said that after meeting high overheads, he only drew personal wages of C150 a week.
Campbell added that he never considered he was doing any thing illegal, and claimed that the dairies concerned would have had to stop making cream if they had no method of disposing of the unwanted skimmed milk.
Sheriff John Wheatley postponed sentence for a fortnight for a background report, and a full statement of Campbell's assets.
