Extended-tours operators who attended the gathering organized by the Scottish Tourist Board last week seemed agreed that what was needed from Scottish hoteliers was evening entertainment for the guests. I was told that if this were provided, the worry about poor weather north of the Border could be overcome.
J. P. Beaumont, director of ShearingPleasureways Holidays, said he started running tours to the Smith Coast in March this year, with bell-ringing and singing to entertain the passengers at night. The last tour, departing November 29, is well on the way to being full. He felt that all that was required was warmth—a fire in the lounge and a hot-water bottle in the bed—and he could run tours to Scotland virtually all the year round. He has Christmas and New Year tours lined up, and February is about the only non-operating period.
