TRANSCONTAINER 1, the French National Railways new roll-on /roll-off container ship started services recently from Harwich to Dunkirk. The ship can carry 192 20ft containers or a combination of 20ft, 30ft or 40ft containers which are located in cells below the lower deck and on the lower and upper decks. Trailers and containers on slave trailers can be carried on both decks and these are loaded by normal roll-on /roll-off methods. The ship has its own internal gantry cranes on the lower deck for container handling within the deck and cells. Provision has been made for lift-off /lift-on handling of containers by dockside cranes through deck openings.
Services at present are three trips each way per week but as traffic increases the frequency will be stepped up to a return journey every 24 hours.
This new service fits in with existing British Railways train ferry services from Harwich to Dunkirk and links with through Freightliner services to Europe to provide facilities for all modes of freight carrying on this important route.
