Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Here's the second instalment in our series of weekly bulletins to help you prepare for the new tachograph technology, courtesy of the FTA.

A driver must have been issued with a driver card in order to use a vehicle fitted with a digital tachograph. Cards are personal to drivers and issued by the DVLA (0870 850 1074).

Operators will need to make some important decisions: • When do drivers need to apply for cards? Make sure applications are made in good time they can apply up to three months before the card's starting date.

• Who will pay the £38 for the first card? A survey of ETA members found that most operators expect to pay for the first card.

• What will happen if drivers forget their cards? Remember, if they hold cards they may not drive any goods vehicles subject to tachograph rules even those fitted with analogue tachographs.

• What will happen when drivers' cards are lost or stolen? Company and driver procedures must be in place.

• Who will pay the £19 for replacement cards and renewal cards? Replacements for lost or stolen cards expire at the same time as the card they are replacing, whereas renewal cards last for five years. Our survey suggests that in most cases drivers will be told to pay for these.

You may need to amend your terms and conditions of employment or staff handbooks to reflect these decisions.
