ANTI-SKID Controls of Coventry has developed the CRM, a Maxaret anti-lock braking system for steering axles.
The CRM will become available as soon as its type approval is completed, probably by next month, and will complement the CR system for drive axles and the MDR for multi-axle trailer bogies.
The CRM is of the wheel sensed, axle control, select low type of anti-lock system. When the nearside and offside steered wheels are on surfaces with different coefficients of friction, the CRM Maxaret will modulate brake pressure on both wheels according to the more slippery surface.
The microprocessor which controls the Maxaret valve takes its signals on wheel speed from toothed discs attached to the hubs. The CR Maxaret system uses a propellor shaft speea sensor.
Operator and manufacturer interest in commercial vehicle anti-lock braking systems has increased recently as EEC legislation on the subject has become increasingly likely.
The recently published House of Commons transport committee report on road safety referred to articulated vehicle jack-knifing and though it acknowledged that this is not a major cause of accidents — less than three per cent of hgv accidents in 1982 — it recommended that "any technical advances which help to reduce the scale of this problem should be strongly encouraged by the Department of Transport."
