HENRY SANDERSON, OBE, director of freight at British Rail, is retiring early next month after 57 years with BR.
He has headed the freight operation since 1978. After BR's re-organisation in 1982 he took on the title of director of freight and played a major part in steering Railfreight into a single unified business with rising profit objectives.
Before his move to freight he was BR's first director of public affairs.
Colin Driver, BR's Eastern region deputy manager, is to replace Mr Sanderson as director of freight.
Mr Driver has been based at York at the Eastern region for the past six years. Before taking up the deputy manager position in 1982 from 1978 he was chief passenger manager.
• lain King, British Rail's area manager at Birmingham for the past five-and-a-half years, has been appointed parcels manager for the London Midland Region.
