TRAFFIC using the Dartford Tunnel under the Thames will have to pay increased tolls from next month.

The new tolls are payable by all classes of motor vehicles and come into force on April 1.

Secretary of State for Transport William Rodgers has approved the increases after a public inquiry into objections to the original in. crease application. The tolls are set by Essex and Kent County Councils acting through the Dartford Tunnel Joint Committee.

The new tolls are as follows, with the present charges in brackets: motor cars and light goods vehicles, 35p (25p); medium goods vehicles (over 30cwt, two axles), 55p (40p); heavy goods vehicles (more than two axles), 85p (60p); buses and coaches (depending on seating capacity), 35p (25p); 55p (40p); 85p (60p).
