ONE of the chief reasons for the increase in the price of food had been the vast increase in transport costs, the head of the Economic Commission had said, pointed out Julian Ridsdale (Tory, Harwich) in the Commons last week.
Under Secretary for Prices and Consumer Protection, Robert Maclennan, agreed that it was true that the cost of distribution was a major part in the end price paid by the consumer in the shop.
He noted that a number of studies had been carried out by the Price Commission into the distribution of meat and fish especially.
If Mr Ridsdale had in mind a specific problem, Mr Maclennan suggested that he should draw it to the attention of the Prices Secretary.
