CRMCISM of the volume of legislation facing the transport industry has come from Peter Hendy, chairman of the Avon and Wessex division of the Freight Transport Association.
Speaking at its annual general meeting, Mr Hendy said that escalating costs of transport were caused not only by wage increases but by complex legislation.
Examples of this were the Government's plans to replace vehicle excise duty with increased petrol tax, and the lorry control cordon in the Windsor area.
The most recent example of well-meaning but ineffective legislation was the regulation that came into force earlier this month requiring the height of certain vehicles to be marked in the cab.
This, said Mr Hendy, was of limited value because many bridge heights were not marked.
He concluded that legislative intervention "was almost out of control and was a most serious obstacle to UK economic revival."
