Obituary We record with regret the death of Norman Shortland.

Mr Shortland, 56, two years ago on grounds of ill health resigned as chairman of Morton's (BRS) Ltd, the Coventry transport company. He had then been with the company for 37 years, 20 of these as a director and seven as chairman. In May 1962, the company's transport division had a fleet of about 70 vehicles. By the time the company was acquired by BRS in 1966, it was operating 220 trucks serving industries throughout the UK and on the Continent. During the Second World War Mr Shortland served as a staff captain with the 8th Army. After the war he became industrial coal manager with Morton's. He joined the board of directors in 1951. A well-known sportsman in Warwickshire, he was awarded his county cricket cap in 1946. He became a director of Coventry City Football Club two years ago. After a series of coronary thromboses in 1970, Mr Shortland set himself a two-year target to recover his "peak fitness" and he returned to work as an independent transport and garage consultant and became a director of a number of Midlands companies, including Cartransport (MRS) Ltd. In 1971 he joined the board of E.H. Crinage and Son Ltd and the following year the board of Whitley Garage (Coventry) Ltd, part of the J. H. B. Jackson Group.
