a report on the unification of road traffic rules—a report which was last week adopted by the Assembly's transport committee. The Assembly has stressed that unifying action is now needed, especially to provide a European road safety code, a harmonization of vehicle weight and dimension regulations, and a system of training road users. • The transport committee also discussed pipeline developments, opinions being sharply divided on whether or not transport pipelines were strictly " power " or " transport " responsibilities, and whether or not firm regulations should in any case be laid down.
Springs and Semis
QN Tuesday, F. J. Evans, Ltd., London, N.W.10, held a demonstration of Cary Laminaire suspension at Bexley, Kent, for commercial vehicle operators in the area. The value of the suspension was shown in the coupling of semi-trailers and improved ride when unladen.
At the same time. Merriworth (Engineering), Ltd., who lent the semitrailer for the demonstrations, showed examples from the range of semi-trailers they produce. An interesting model was an open-sided van-type unit, the first of a number being built for Reed Transport, Ltd., for the transport of paper products. This 27-ft.-long semi-trailer was basically a standard platform unit, with full-height front and rear headboards, a roof and with a central division running the length of the platform.
Complete protection for the load is given by full-height canvas curtains at both sides. Marine plywood and rectangular-section steel tube are used extensively for the superstructure, and this, said Merriworths, helped to keep down the cost of manufacture to about £300 less than comparable units of a similar design although -the usual high standard of Merriworth productions is maintained.
